Carillion helps council open carriageway early
A
new £4.1 million one-mile (1.6-kilometre) section of the A15 Paston
Parkway dual carriageway in the north of Peterborough has opened one
month early, giving motorists improved journeys between junction 21
(Gunthorpe) and junction 22 (Werrington) thanks to main contractor
Carillion and consulting engineers Atkins.
The project was financed through the Department for Communities and
Local Government’s Growth Area Fund (GAF) to provide infrastructure
improvements in locations earmarked for rapid growth. Construction
began last August and was originally expected to be completed by the
end of March. However, work has taken only six months, allowing an
opening one month early for clients Peterborough City Council.
Phil Ford, Carillion Civil Engineering Contracts Manager said: “This
has been a successful project from the very beginning with close
working between Carillion, Peterborough City Council and Atkins –
the fact that we’re finishing it early is testament to this. We hope
this important new addition to Peterborough adds to the continuing
success of the area.”
Councillor Graham Murphy, Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet member
for environment and community safety, said: “The early completion of
this dualling project is good news, especially for local residents
whose streets have sometimes been used as ‘rat-runs’ by motorists.
The dualling of this final section of Paston Parkway brings many
benefits for travellers in Peterborough.”
Paston Parkway is a principal northern ‘gateway’ into Peterborough
and the dualling project will now mitigate present peak-time
congestion and manage future traffic growth. Peterborough City
Council’s Local Transport Plan 2 forecasts a 35 per cent increase in
traffic across the city (2003-2021) without intervention. There
would be significant journey delays on the parkway network,
including Paston Parkway, without improvement schemes such as this.
Paston Parkway forms part of Peterborough’s dual carriageway parkway
system, which was mainly completed during the city’s new town
expansion under a government-appointed development corporation in
the 1970s and 1980s. However, the section between junctions 21 and
22 was constructed as a single carriageway in 1986, although land to
the east of the road was acquired for its eventual dualling.
