DLG Architects -£40 Million Skipton Scheme On Site
Work
has started on site for the much anticipated Belle Vue Mills
development in Skipton, North Yorkshire. The £40 million, mixed use,
regeneration scheme will restore a number of disused historic mills
and transform the area into a prestigious new living and retail
destination.
Designed for Novo Homes by award winning Practice, DLG Architects
and Skipton based Wales,Wales & Rawson Architects , Belle Vue Mills
includes 122 residential properties, prime office space, leisure
facilities and new retail outlets as well as spacious parking for
residents and visitors. The site, which is attractively located
adjacent to the Leeds Liverpool canal, is designed to complement
existing facilities in Skipton and act as a unified extension to the
town centre. North Midland Building Ltd has been appointed main
contractor for the development and the first phase of works is
scheduled to complete by October 2008. Similar to DLG Architect’s
innovative and award winning design approach to ‘The Light’, in
Leeds city centre, Belle Vue Mills will centre on a spectacular
atrium which infills an existing courtyard, complete with a
state-of-the-art ETFE roof, and a dramatic glazed façade taking in
views across the nearby countryside.
Mark Hewitt, Associate Director at DLG Architects in Leeds comments:
“We are delighted that work has started on this exciting scheme. It
is a challenging brief combining careful conservation with quality
contemporary design that will deliver a space quite unique to
Skipton. We have been careful to retain the original character of
the mill buildings but also provide a sustainable development that
can thrive through public use and integrate well with existing town
centre facilities.”
Situated in a conservation area, Belle Vue Mills was considered a
prime development opportunity by Novo Homes which acquired the
buildings from well known card manufacturer Kingsley Cards four
years ago. Full planning permission was granted in 2005 which saw
many local authority members voice their support for the scheme.
The luxury residential apartments were released by Novo Homes for
public sale in September last year and already over 60 per cent of
the first phase has been reserved off plan.
