LUXURY HOTEL GETS THE HIPPOWASTE™ TREATMENT TO ACHIEVE 100%
RECYCLING RATE
 While
you wouldn’t usually associate a luxury hotel with a load of
rubbish, that’s exactly what Cardy Construction, working with Elite
Hotels, had to consider when they were charged with the renovation
of the luxurious Luton Hoo Hotel. They have since successfully
achieved a 100% recycling rate on site after working with national
waste management company, HIPPOWASTE™ and leading supplier to the
construction industry, Tarmac Topblock.
Recognising the importance of managing construction waste
efficiently, Cardy adopted some innovative ways of achieving
improved environmental performance and reduced spend.
As a first step towards increasing their recycling levels, Cardy
began using Tarmac’s Take Back Scheme which enables sites to dispose
of all broken, damaged or unused blocks in specially provided 1
cubic yard capacity HIPPOBAGS™. Once 10 or more bags are full, they
are collected by HIPPOWASTE™ and returned to the nearest Topblock or
Tarmac Recycling plant, where the material is crushed and recycled
into new blocks.
After being introduced to HIPPOWASTE™, the company behind the
pioneering HIPPOBAG™, through the Tarmac scheme, Cardy tasked the
company with reducing the amount of other wastes being sent to
landfill and increasing overall levels of recycling on site, whilst
reducing costs and improving waste reporting and recycling
procedures.
Since adopting the HIPPOBAG™ solution and with increased diligence
and materials awareness amongst the Cardy site staff, 100% of the
waste collected on the construction site has been recycled.
Following the advice of HIPPOWASTE™, a site employee is now taking
responsibility to ensure these standards are continuously
met.

have clear waste reporting procedures in place allowing us to
identify the types of waste being generated and how each is disposed
of. This helps us to monitor and improve our environmental
performance.
“Furthermore, the flexibility of the HIPPOBAG™ means the site is
kept cleaner, which matters when working on such a prestigious
project, and waste can be segregated easily to improve recycling and
reduce costs.”
Following its experience at Luton Hoo Hotel, Cardy Construction have
begun to integrate the HIPPOBAG™ solution on more of their projects
including the construction of buildings at the site of Cheyne Wind
Farm in Romney Marsh, Kent.
