Landmark Building Showcases Glendyne Slate from Cembrit
 Grand
and imposing, Old College Court is a Listed Grade 2 Queen Anne-style
building on the A206* in Erith which has recently been refurbished
and converted into apartments. An important local landmark, it has a
skyline of some distinction which has been further enhanced by
Cembrit’s Glendyne natural slate installed by WAA Roofing of
Greenwich.
Dating from 1906 and designed by William Egerton MSA, a local
architect and surveyor (who is also credited with the town’s
Carnegie Library) the building had an original slate roof that
provided harmo-nious complement to this proudly institutional
example of red-brick Edwardian civic architecture. As the largest
and most elaborate building in the Erith Road Area, the local
Conservation Advisory Committee only considered the highest quality
natural slate as an acceptable roofing material. Following lengthy
con-sultation, Glendyne was selected as the natural slate most
likely to make a positive contribution to the ongoing lifecycle and
public scene of the building.
35,000 Glendyne slates were supplied to WAA by local merchant
Alltype Roofing Supplies. John Bate-man, MD of WAA Roofing comments:
“The location of the building means that the slate roof is
particu-larly prominent. We chose Cembrit’s Glendyne knowing through
past experience they were suitable for the demanding conservation
requirements and fully enhance the character of the building. All
those in-volved in this project are delighted with the results.”
Glendyne is a high quality slate quarried from the Canadian town of
Saint Marc du Lac Long, Quebec, Canada. A dark blue/grey, with a
fine, consistent grain and smooth texture, it benefits from a
combination of modern extraction technology and traditional
finishing skills to ensure a consistently high standard product.
Able to withstand the most all weather conditions including
sunlight, UV light, and even acid rain, Glendyne is remarkably
similar in character to the Welsh Ffestiniog Slate. Available
exclusively from Cembrit in the UK, it offers great value for money
and laid correctly, will last the lifetime of a building.
Using skills built up over 80 years, Cembrit select natural slate
from Spain, Canada, Brazil, China, India and the countries of
Western Europe. From UK quarries Cembrit offer Welsh, Cornish and
Westmor-land slates. Quality levels at Group factories are
rigorously maintained to high standards with fibre ce-ment slates
produced to BS EN 492:2004 and manufactured under the control of a
BS EN ISO 9001: 2000 quality management system. Furthermore the
company operates an environmental management system to ISO
14001:1996. Cembrit UK is a member of Cembrit Holding A/S (formerly
the Dansk Eter-nit Holding A/S) of Denmark, one of Europe’s major
building material producers of fibre reinforced ce-ment products for
