MASSIVE REGENERATION OPPORTUNITY - DEVELOPER SOUGHT
 THE
regeneration of South Shields Riverside has taken a significant step
forward with the announcement that a development opportunity on a
prime site has come onto the market,
The site of almost two acres on Harton Staithes is being marketed
and offers the potential to develop a mixed use scheme of up to
150,000 sq ft.
The site is located in a fantastic position next to the River Tyne
and South Shields town centre, next to the historic Market Square
and close to major public transport links including the Metro
Station and South Shields Ferry.
Landowner regional development agency One NorthEast is seeking a
private sector company to develop a high quality mixed-use scheme.
Bidders are invited to submit proposals for the site, which must
include as a minimum 51,000 sq ft nett of high quality office
accommodation – for which there is a potential pre-let – together
with a hotel.
Additional elements can be incorporated into the development,
including further office and leisure facilities.
Ed Rowley, Acting Director of Regeneration at One NorthEast, said:
“This site has tremendous potential so we’re looking for companies
to come up with ambitious, exciting plans which will turn that
potential into a thriving mixed-use development.
“South Shields has an extraordinary riverside and industrial
landscape so any development has to complement these and fit with
the vision for the whole of the South Shields Riverside area.”
One NorthEast is working alongside South Tyneside Council to
regenerate South Shields Riverside with public sector investment
totalling around £500m.
Studio Egret West has prepared an exciting masterplan setting out
the vision for the regeneration and rejuvenation of the area,
incorporating a vibrant mix of commercial, residential and leisure
facilities.
The masterplan highlights job creation, creating sustainable
communities and reconnecting neighbourhoods with the waterfront as
key objectives of the scheme.
Already planned is a waterfront park which will run the length of
the river frontage, connecting five new neighbourhoods which
together will provide 1,300 new homes, 87,000 sq m of business space
and retail and leisure facilities.
Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said:
“The regeneration of South Shields Riverside is the most exciting
development in our borough for decades.
“By working with our partners we will realise our vision of
breathing new life into this unique industrial landscape,
transforming it into a superb waterfront development which will
attract major investment and bring new wealth, new housing and
thousands of jobs and training opportunities.
“The Riverside Regeneration masterplan will integrate local
communities and our neighbourhood renewal initiatives with a high
quality development offering people a good quality of life with
attractive places to live, beautiful buildings and public spaces,
close to where they work.”
Mr Rowley added: “The work going on in South Shields will help it
become one of the jewels of North East regeneration.
“It is an example of the outstanding regeneration projects being
delivered across the region, with millions of pounds of public and
private sector investment helping to transform it into a prime
location to live, work, do business, visit and study.”
Initial expressions of interest for the site must be submitted by
Friday, July 25.
