Young Designer Awards winners announced
The winners of the Power of Aluminium Young Designer Awards have now
been announced – with students from London South Bank University
taking three out of the four awards up for grabs and a student from
Northumbria University also scooping a title.
Presented at the degree shows of the respective universities on 17
June 2008 (Northumbria) and 20 June 2008 (London South Bank)
students were recognised for their ability to utilise aluminium
extrusion in innovative new designs for everyday objects.
Overall Winner was London South Bank student Mark Detre who took the
top honours for ‘Omni’ – his novel modular furniture system. Judges
recognised Mark’s use of aluminium as a highly recyclable product
within a highly visual furniture system. They also noted the fact
that Omni is simple to assemble, flexible and available within a
range of colours.
Another London South Bank student following closely behind to take
the Highly Commended Award was Emmanuel Odoom for his ‘Z-Board’
design. A thoroughly modern take on the ironing board, Emmanuel has
developed a visually striking design concept using 100% recyclable
aluminium and providing easy storage capabilities using extrusion
profile hinges.
Taking the two Commended titles were Northumbria University student
Chris Iveson for ‘the easyshield’ and Andrea Mighali from London
South Bank for his ‘X2dles’ design.
Chris Iveson showcased his ‘easyshield’ laptop protection case.
Considered by judges to be a very well presented detailed design,
the case uses the high functionality of the extrusion process to
achieve results and is an excellent combination of materials to
provide the right functional result.
Andrea’s innovative ’X2dles’ design takes aluminium into the world
of fashion with an interchangeable watch and belt design which could
easily be marketed as a sign of the wearer’s green credentials.
Chairman of the judging panel, Martin Jarrett said: “These students
have shown just how versatile aluminium can be in the modern world.
They have been innovative in their creations and demonstrated the
huge environmental, flexible and aesthetic benefits of this metal.”
