Recognition for environmentally responsible construction at CIWM
Excellence Awards
Construction companies have only a short time left to enter the
Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Awards for
Environmental Excellence, which recognise and reward companies that
have introduced successful measures to reduce their environmental
impact.
Now in their second year, the 2008 CIWM Awards will be hosted by
television presenter and conservationist Philippa Forrester at The
Dorchester, Park Lane, London on November 5th 2008. The judging
panel includes Owen Jenkins, Director of CIRIA, Colin Mew from the
Health & Safety Executive, Jane Milne, Director of Business &
Environment for the British Retail Consortium, and Liz Goodwin,
Chief Executive of WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme).
Steve Lee, chief executive of the CIWM, said: “Construction is one
of a number of major sectors that are increasingly linked into the
recycling and waste minimisation agenda. The construction industry
is working hard to reduce waste, improve sustainability and promote
health and safety best practice and it is important to recognise
these positive developments.”
A range of construction companies, both large and small, are being
encouraged to enter the awards. Entrants can demonstrate
environmental excellence in a variety of areas: the use of
sustainable materials and products in construction; site waste
minimisation and recycling during demolition and construction;
health and safety best practice; and plant and equipment management.
The 2008 award categories are:
Sustainable Retailer of the Year
Sustainable Product Development of the Year
Sustainable Facilities Management Performance of the Year
Individual Recycling Champion of the Year
Recycling Performance of the Year
Vehicle of the Year
Plant and Equipment of the Year
Construction and Demolition: Product Use
Construction and Demolition: Site Management
Health and Safety Best Practice
Innovative Practice in Waste and Resource Recovery
Overall Award for Environmental Excellence
Last year saw many high profile and high quality submissions, and
the CIWM is expecting more of the same this year. Finalists from the
construction sector included Carillion plc, British Airports
Authority (BAA) and VHE Construction plc, and the winners were the
Genesis Project in the Construction and Demolition: Product Use
category, and BAA in the Construction and Demolition: Site
Management category.
