Leading UK Safety and Inspection bodies endorse new Chubb Health
& Safety programmes
Chubb’s environment, health and training initiatives have been
praised by both the Office for Standards in Education and the
Children’s Services and Skills (OFSTED), and endorsed by the Health
and Safety Executive (HSE). Chubb Electronic Security is part of UTC
Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
OFSTED, the UK government learning and skills inspection body, was
impressed with Chubb’s accident investigation procedure and intends
to highlight it as best practice on its website and other media.
Chubb’s accident investigation programme uses relentless root cause
analysis to get to the heart of how and why accidents occur in order
to prevent them from happening again. The process enables users to
go beyond treating the symptoms of a problem to identify the
fundamental cause.
“OFSTED looked closely at our new ‘Root Cause’ accident
investigation process and was most impressed,” explains Bob Tormay,
EH&S manager, Chubb. “We were invited to present to the Learning and
Skills Council (LSC) across the north west, and OFSTED has indicated
that it intends to highlight our procedures as best practice on
their website and other media.”
OFSTED was launched on April 1, 2007 and brings together four
inspectorates, inspecting and regulating care for children and young
people and education and training for learners of all ages. It
inspects the quality of the training provision at least once every
four years.
In the same spirit of promoting health and safety, Chubb recently
teamed up with a training provider - Safety Improvements and
Training (SIAT) - to launch another initiative, the safe worker
passport course. This integral safety management component has been
endorsed by the HSE (the UK body for encouragement, regulation and
enforcement of workplace health, safety and welfare) and the UK’s
Institute of Health and Safety (IOSH). The new passport will
continue to give assurance to customers that Chubb’s employees have
received the necessary training to undertake specialist work within
a range of industry sectors.
“The problem with existing passport schemes is that they are too
general and simply do not specifically cover the activities in which
our engineers might be typically involved,” Bob continues. “Most
customers will rightly ask for proof of health and safety competence
through a Client Contractor National Safety Group (CCNSG) passport
or equivalent before engineers can gain access to a site. The answer
was to work with SIAT and IOSH to agree to specifications for our
own passport, which uses the organiation’s standards, and the HSE
syllabus.
“Safety in the workplace is a key priority for Chubb in the UK and
UTC Fire & Security globally. Our new training programmes and
passport process are further evidence of how Chubb is committed to
developing its own programs even when no other exists.”
