CEDIA REPORTS POSITIVE UK EXPO
 Against a backdrop of increasingly tough economic conditions across
Europe, the 12th CEDIA UK Expo (23-26 June, ExCeL London) sounded a
positive note for the custom installation industry. In an event
marked by a range of ‘firsts’, CEDIA (the Custom Electronic Design &
Installation Association) has announced that new product launches,
an education programme which was 25% bigger than last year,
networking activities and a variety of innovative feature areas
combined to attract a healthy Expo attendance, totaling 7,474.
Electronic systems designers, installers and trade suppliers
represented the vast majority of the overall audience, with 40% of
visitors taking their first ever trip to CEDIA UK Expo. This
attendance also included design professionals from architectural,
interior design and property development disciplines, who made up
12% of the audience, and a higher proportion of electrical
contractors, comprising a further 7% compared to 3% last year.
International visitors representing 48 number countries also
attended, making up 15% of the total.
“This year’s CEDIA Expo shows that the custom installation industry
is in good health“ says CEDIA Chairman, Simon Williams. “There were
some great new products on show, with a number of exhibitors pulling
out all the stops in the quality and creativity of their stand
design. Taken with a range of new feature areas and innovations
introduced this year, CEDIA Expo felt fresh and exciting. The reward
was a steady stream of visitors, and plenty of newcomers too - an
indication that the industry is evolving and attracting the new
blood necessary to sustain its growth.”
Nearly 130 companies, including both major players and a high
percentage of first time exhibitors, took part in this year’s event,
using the show as a platform for launching new and emerging
technologies into the European market. Meanwhile, CEDIA UK Expo
again proved itself a magnet for the media with TV crews from Sky
News, GMTV, the Press Association and others filming interviews with
exhibitors and creating a buzz at the show.
The CEDIA education programme provided over 200 hours of quality
training for delegates. 52 delegates passed the CEDIA certification
exams held at the event, and training was also provided in the new
Certification for Home Cinema Design Specialists course – a world
first. Those already Certified were able to maintain their status by
gaining Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for attendance and
completion of courses on the CEDIA Education programme and CEDIA
approved Trade Supplier Product training courses running at the
event.
Debut attractions in education also included a lively industry panel
debate featuring Ivor Tiefenbrun, MBE, Executive Chairman of Linn,
Jeremy Burkhardt, President of Speakercraft and Steve Moore of SMC
discussing the changing face of home entertainment and other topics.
Meanwhile, a new Hot Topics Theatre located on the show floor saw
speakers from Apple TV, the BBC and others presenting topical, free
sessions to packed audiences. The top six most popular training
courses included New Technologies Update, What’s On The Horizon?,
Multi Room Audio and Video Distribution, TCP/IP and Ethernet
Foundation Course, the Structured Cabling Design and Installation
Workshop and the High Definition and HDMI Workshop. Meanwhile, the
extended Trade Supplier training sessions also proved extremely
popular with 12 companies delivering 40 sessions free of charge to
delegates. In total nearly 700 individuals filled training session
places over the programme’s four day duration.
“The education programme shows that Certification is now firmly
established as a benchmark within the industry” says Simon Williams.
“Here, too, industry firsts made an important contribution. Home
Cinema Certification, the Panel Debate and the Hot Topics Theatre
all proved popular with delegates and visitors. On behalf of CEDIA,
I would like to extend a personal thank you to all the volunteers,
exhibitors and CEDIA staff who made CEDIA Expo 2008 such a memorable
success. We look forward to another great event in 2009.”
The central CEDIA area provided a perfect place for visitors to meet
and exchange views with current Board members, and find out more
about the work of the Association. Visitors also had the chance to
learn more about the CEDIA Region 1 Awards scheme at a dedicated
feature area on the show floor, where the winner of the Best Special
project Category in 2007, the Cadillac Escalade, proved a big draw,
thanks to CEDIA ESP member, Prestige Audio.
The Chairman’s Reception took place at ‘The Fox@ExCeL’ on Tuesday
24th June. CEDIA Chairman Simon Williams welcomed 400 invited
guests, representing exhibitors, CEDIA Trade Supplier and ESP
members to this informal drinks and canapés reception. The sell out
CEDIA party, meanwhile, took place at Raan, a trendy, boutique venue
in the O2 Arena.
In 2009 CEDIA Expo will run from 22nd to 25th June 2009 (training:
22nd to 25th June; exhibition: 23rd to 25th June) at ExCeL London.
