IT’S A MATERIAL WORLD AT DECOREX CHELSEA ROYAL HOSPITAL, 21-24
SEPTEMBER 2008
Interesting
materials used in innovative ways will mark out this year's Decorex
as one of the most exciting shows on the interiors calendar. Last
year shagreen was the material of choice for many designers and
featured on everything from a bespoke games table, complete with
backgammon set by Ben Whistler to an antique console table set with
a shagreen top from Golfar & Hughes. Here we take a look at the hot
new materials being used in interiors and set to be big at Decorex
this year.
De Ferranti
Although Alvaro De Ferranti only started this company just under two
years ago, his career, knowledge and passion in extraordinary
materials reaches much further. He sources materials from all over
the world, with many having historical roots and provenance. He can
also be credited with reviving ancient techniques to source just the
right look for his clients. The list of materials he gathers around
him reads like a gazetteer of fascinating artefacts - river pebbles,
rock crystal, antique stone, mother-of-pearl, pietre dure, majolica,
cinnamon bark, onyx and molten lava. His experience in handling
these exquisite materials is put to good use in creating bespoke
ideas for his clients – micro pebble mosaics for a top deck pool,
baths in solid carved stone and petrified wood and backlit onyx for
a saloon bar, to name but a few. Amongst all these intricate,
luxurious surfaces, are some quietly beautiful materials such as
bitter chocolate limestone mosaic.
SoFar/SoNear
Milan based SoFar/SoNear is the first Italian company designing and
producing high end fabrics and carpets with a sustainable and fair
trade focus, which they do with style, panache and with interesting
materials. SoFar/SoNear has collaborated with award winning O
Ecotextiles to create a stunning collection. Alongside the
traditional cottons, silks and velvets, SoFar/SoNear has
experimented with natural materials including woven pineapple
fibres, abaca and linen/hemp blends, combining these interestingly
textured fabrics with subtle metallic prints in illustrative styles.
Archer & Smith
This company's collection drew gasps of admiration at last year's
Decorex. To their credit, they won the BIDA award for ‘Product of
outstanding quality and design innovation’. The craftsmanship and
style applied to every piece that comes out of their Queen Anne
manor house workshops in Wiltshire is second to none. This year's
star attractions are still under wraps, but we are promised a wealth
of elegant materials from goat vellum, embossed leather, white gold
and platinum leaf finishes and silver nickel-plated metal. There
will be faux tortoiseshell and ivory and a cracked gesso gold leaf
finish. Nearly everything Archer & Smith make is to order using
age-old techniques that thankfully the company are keeping alive
through their extraordinary bespoke service, and a commitment to
traditional apprenticeships.
Hyde House
For a first-time exhibitor Decorex could be a daunting prospect, but
Hyde House are quietly confident that they will be an exciting
addition to the show. There is an interesting partnership behind the
company. Richard Searle was surrounded with furniture making from an
early age (the Searle family have made bespoke furniture for over 60
years), so it was no surprise that Richard trained at the London
College of Furniture and has spent the last twenty years creating
beautiful, high quality pieces from his workshops in Hertfordshire.
As Joanna Hauptman, the other half of this new partnership explains,
"I have spent my career in the luxury end of publishing, working
closely with brands such as Chanel, Prada and Louis Vuitton. Richard
and I want to create a very luxurious furniture collection that
combines our ideas and skills for a look that is classic and made to
last." Luxurious faux skins and real hides such as shagreen, lizard,
ostrich, crocodile, metallic leathers, silver leaf and black lacquer
underpin the look, with silks and satins adding a softer touch. "We
want to make luxury affordable. And so much of what we do is
eminently practical too. I also believe each piece in the collection
makes an architectural statement in its own right. Just one
signature piece can bring an interior up to another level,” assures
Hauptman.
Harlequin Tabletop
It wouldn’t be Decorex without Harlequin Tabletop’s exquisite
tableware displays. This year’s show will be no exception, with fine
porcelain maker Herring joining the long list of prestigious names
the company carries. Harlequin will showcase the latest collections
by Herring which include a range of porcelain tableware featuring
hand sponged ridges, hand drilled decorative bowls and plates
featuring a unique silver finish.
By way of celebrating ten years in the business, owner/director
Jamie Horton is extending his collection (and showroom) still
further to include ARCA - an exquisitely beautiful range of
furniture and accessories created in horn. It is high-end Italian
style at its very best. As a family run business ARCA has been
perfecting their craft since 1958.
Every piece of horn ARCA uses has been cured for eight years and is
treated by hand. Light toned horn is used alongside considerably
rarer dark horn, which is around 30 percent smaller than its light
toned alternative, to create the range of furniture, lighting and
tabletop accessories. An intensive process is undertaken to flatten
the horn to be used as an inlay on larger pieces of furniture. ARCA
collaborates with Italy’s number one piano manufacturer who lacquers
each item with nine layers of resin before undertaking two sets of
polishing. Each exquisite piece in the collection shows just how
beautiful horn can be on its own, or combined with other equally
glamorous materials and finishes.
Chloe Alberry
Like the best sweetie shop, Chloe Alberry’s stand at Decorex always
draws the crowds. Carving out a name for herself as the handle
queen, Alberry sees this Decorex as a culmination of months of
development in new ideas. These include a collection of door handles
and knobs in fossilised wood. Having a distinct grain and available
in several colourways, the look would add a naturally beautiful
finish to simple interiors. And keeping with the organic theme,
Alberry introduces obsidian, a semi-precious stone made from the
lava of a volcano. Usually found in dark shades, Alberry has chosen
gorgeous smokey brown and pale pink shades in this tactile
glass-like material.
