Local community shows solid support for development of former
Steyning Workhouse
English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency, and Crest
Nicholson were delighted with the response they received when they
revealed their initial plans for the development of the former
Steyning Workhouse in Shoreham.
Over 200 local residents attended an open exhibition and were asked
for their comments on the proposed plans for redeveloping the
derelict site and building up to 200 new homes in a community set
around new formal and informal areas of open spaces, new public
parks and a range of new community facilities.
Although many of the existing Victorian structures were inherited
and are in a dangerous state of disrepair, English Partnerships and
Crest Nicholson are planning to retain and refurbish a significant
number of the surviving workhouse buildings.
As a result of the public meeting over 91 detailed comment forms
were submitted to the development team; 38 of those were in support
of as it stands; a further 48 responses supported the redevelopment
with some reservations and suggested amendments and only two
outright responses objected to the scheme.
Valuable comments and suggestions were received and these are being
incorporated where possible into the further development of the
proposed layout.
Commenting on the success of the public consultation for the site,
English Partnerships' Regional Director, David Ashworth said:
“Public consultation is at the core of everything we do at English
Partnerships and I am delighted that so many people took the trouble
to visit the exhibition.
“We insist on running these sessions with our development partners
to ensure that the local residents and wider community are aware of
the plans and have the opportunity to guide them. To create a truly
sustainable community it is vital that we bring the local community
with us. The Shoreham site will deliver not only a direct benefit to
the new residents but to the wider community. As part of the scheme
we
will be dedicating a significant amount of land to new public open
spaces and parks and will also create new community facilities open
to everyone living in the area."
The 4.38 ha development site covers the land and buildings of the
former Victorian workhouse south of Upper Shoreham Road and west of
Park Avenue. It does not include any land or buildings owned by the
neighbouring Southlands NHS hospital.

A further public consultation event is planned for early autumn 2008
