XTRALIS VESDA RECEIVES IMPORTANT EUROPEAN UNION CERTIFICATIONS
 VESDA
is the First ASD Solution to be CE Marked Under the EU Construction
Products Directive (CPD), following Successful Completion of Testing
to EN-54-20
(Hemel Hempstead, July 2008). Xtralis, the leading global provider
of fire and security solutions, today announced that its VESDA range
of Aspirating Smoke Detectors (ASD) has become the first in the
industry to receive the EC Certificate of Conformity and to meet the
full requirements of EN 54-20.
The EN 54-20 standard becomes a mandatory requirement across most of
Europe next year and, for the first time, introduces performance
requirements for high sensitivity detection systems.
Mariann McDonagh, senior vice president of corporate marketing for
Xtralis said, “we are proud to have achieved the EN54-20 approval
more than 12 months before the official European deadline. Now
people can specify Xtralis ASD solutions with the full confidence
that they will be compliant upon installation and commissioning.”
McDonagh continued, “this is particularly relevant in countries such
as the UK, where the Installation Code of Practice (e.g.
BS5839-1:2008) already recommends that ASD systems should comply
with EN 54-20.”
In support of the approval, Xtralis VESDA ASPIRE2 pipe network
design software now includes a range of special features to allow
designers to calculate the EN 54-20 sensitivity Class of even the
most complex pipe and hole configurations - or alternatively to
calculate the detector sensitivity setting needed to achieve a
particular EN 54-20 Class - whether Class A (high sensitivity),
Class B (enhanced sensitivity) or Class C (normal sensitivity).
Peter Massingberd-Mundy, Technology and Expert Practices Manager at
Xtralis added, “this standard is changing the way ASD systems are
specified. For example, for early warning applications, an
aspirating smoke detector with a capability to provide Class A “high
sensitivity” at 30 sampling holes may be specified while for a
project where maintenance access is restricted, an aspirating smoke
detector providing Class C “normal sensitivity” at 40 sampling holes
may be specified.”
Continued Massingberd-Mundy, “fortunately, Xtralis VESDA can address
a wide range of applications and provides multi-stage alarms. For
example, in Class A sensitivity environments, VESDA can transmit a
silent or local "Alert" signal to key staff and then trigger a
"Fire" signal to sound evacuation if smoke reaches levels that would
normally trigger a standard point detector. Such intelligent, phased
responses are becoming increasingly popular as voice evacuation and
communication systems become more sophisticated.”
Xtralis received the formal LPCB and EC certificates at a recent
EN54-20 Road show, designed to educate the fire industry about the
technical highlights and implications of the new product standard.
