FLYING HIGH WITH GEOCEL
 The
frames of over a 400 fire doors in the new T5 at Heathrow Airport
have been sealed using Geocel’s Firex 921 high performance fire- and
smoke-resistant, fire-rated, intumescent MS polymer sealant, while
the joints in the floor of T5’s booking hall achieved an extremely
hard wearing joint seal thanks to Geocel 945.
Sealant specialist Geocel recommended Firex 921 for sealing
expansion and connection joints in fire rated structures, as part of
its family of fire-rated sealants. Sealant applicators Denham
Sealants applied over 2000 linear metres of the Firex 921 as part of
its contract for Swift Horesman.
Denham selected Geocel Firex 921 for this high-profile scheme for a
number of important reasons as Project Manager Mark Maloney
explains. “Obviously the excellent performance of the sealant under
fire conditions was of prime importance but the Geocel sealant had
the edge in a number of other ways. Firstly its impressive movement
capability made it easily able to cope with the high and frequent
levels of movement anticipated as the doors slam shut to maintain
the fire-rated integrity,” he comments. “Secondly, Firex 921 from
Geocel is the only fire-rated sealant supplied in
environmentally-friendly foil ‘sausage’ packs rather than cartridges
– an element which helps us to meet our environmental policies.”
Firex 921 is a one-part, high modulus MS polymer sealant with a
Siloxane Polyether base which will intumesce at 250°C giving a
fire-and smoke-resistant seal with a fire rating up to four hours
achievable with correct joint design and application. It will not
emit any halogenated by-products under fire conditions and contains
no raw materials harmful materials which could have oestrogenic
effects on the environment.
The marble floor of the T5 booking hall is as big as ten full sized
football pitches. The joints were sealed with Geocel 945 sealant by
Aquaflame Ltd of Canvey Island working for main flooring contractor
Grants of Shoreditch and Eagle SG&W for the stone slab suppliers,
Vetta.
Geocel 945 is a high modulus polymer sealant complying with
ISO11600-F-25HM ideal for sealing movement and connection joints in
high specification building substructures. It offers excellent
unprimed adhesion to a wide variety of construction substrates and
with its good movement accommodation (MAF 50%), impressive abrasion
resistance and a cured hardness of 40 to 45 Shore A, Geocel 945 is
suitable for the toughest applications and environments since its
high strength adhesive bond remains permanently flexible. It is
available in white, black, grey, buff, and concrete grey in standard
290ml cartridges or eco-friendly 600ml sausage packs for less waste.
The T5 building was designed by Sir Richard Rogers as the prime
aviation gateway to London and the United Kingdom. 130 feet high and
making optimum use of natural light, the glassy structure has five
floors, each the size of ten football pitches, panoramic windows,
passenger lounges, and 112 shops.
