Arco sets sail for Little Britain Challenge Cup – the UK’s
second largest regatta
 Arco, the UK’s leading supplier of safety products and equipment,
safety management services and workwear, will be flying the flag for
construction site safety at The Little Britain Challenge Cup - the
construction industry’s highest-profile annual sporting event and
the UK’s second largest regatta - held in Cowes on 11-14th
September.
The safety experts have chartered and sponsored two impressive
sailing yachts – a Farr 45 and Beneteau 40.7 – and will be racing in
five events over the three days. For the second year running, Arco
will be presenting a trophy to the winners of Race 4, Class ‘0’.
The Little Britain Challenge Cup comes of age this year, as it’s now
in its 21st year. It has grown from 3 to 250 boats, is the largest
corporate yachting regatta in Europe and the biggest UK gathering of
senior figureheads from the construction and property industry -
encompassing some 250 yachts chartered by all the major architects
and contractors and attracting thousands of competitors.
2.2 million people work in Britain’s construction industry, making
it the country’s biggest industry and one of the most dangerous. In
the last 25 years, over 2,800 people have died from injuries they
received as a result of construction work. There were 77 fatal
injuries to construction workers in 2006/07, a 28% increase on the
previous year. Thirty percent of deaths were due to falls from a
height and 21% were due to being hit by a moving or falling object.
In 2006/07, 32% of all worker deaths were in the construction
industry and reported major injuries to employees rose slightly in
2006/07 to 3711, compared to 3,706 in 2005/06.
With this in mind, Thomas Martin sees the three-day sailing event,
organised by and for the construction industry as a “perfect
opportunity for Arco to champion the necessity for improved
construction site safety.”
Thomas explains, “Safety has to be the number one priority in an
industry still reporting an increasing number of accidents and even
fatalities. We pride ourselves on being able to support this
industry by providing expert advice and guidance on site safety and
by offering a vast range of safety products and clothing that is
available via our catalogue and network of 37 branches. The Little
Britain Challenge Cup offers us the opportunity to further raise our
profile as the safety experts, thank some of our construction
account managers, customers and suppliers, network at a dedicated
industry event and of course have great fun experiencing some
exhilarating sailing.”
Arco’s mobile sales unit will be at the event giving competitors and
spectators the opportunity to buy last minute safety products such
as gloves, hi-vis clothing and ear defenders. The company is also
holding its own challenge every evening with a tug of war. Anybody
at the event is welcome to enter a team on the day, all participants
will receive a complimentary drinks voucher and the winning team
will be presented with a crate of beer. This will take place at
5.00pm on the quayside.
Over many years Little Britain has donated over £1m to sailing
charities helping disadvantaged or disabled people experience the
world of sailing. The 2007 regatta raised in excess of £150,000. The
charitable ethos of the event sits well with Hull-based Arco, a
fourth generation, family-owned-and-run company that has recently
been awarded highly commended status for its CSR policies by the
National Business Awards, and each year donates 1% of its pre-tax
profits to community projects and charitable organisations.
