WOODWORKING WOMEN AND APPRENTICES ON THE UP THANKS TO
CONSTRUCTIONSKILLS FUNDING
Recent figures from the British Woodworking Federation (BWF)
have revealed an encouraging trend in the number of
members benefitting from grants available through
ConstructionSkills. In 2007, over 75% of BWF members
registered to receive the available funding resulting in
a dramatic increase in the number of grant-aided
apprenticeships.
Between 2006 and 2007, the number of grant-aided
apprenticeships increased from 613 to 714 showing the
positive impact of the BWF’s Woodworking Industry
Training Forum (WITForum).
A further £9,000 has also been secured to fund training
for women managers in the woodworking industry, a
development which has been warmly welcomed by BWF
members. 2007 saw 2,200 women entering the woodworking
industry, showing that the industry is becoming more and
more attractive as a career choice.
This encouraging news follows the recent BWF Members’
Day at which Pauline Kelly, the BWF’s first female
president, reminded members of the importance of
training, something she has promised to make her
priority during her term of office.
Pauline Kelly, said: “I am delighted that BWF members
are making such good use of the grants available to them
through ConstructionSkills. Apprenticeships are vital
for the future of the woodworking industry, as they
encourage a new generation to join. But the training of
existing employees is equally important and something
that is often overlooked”.
On the increase in women entering the woodworking
industry, Pauline said: “As a woman in what used to be
an almost exclusively male industry, I am heartened to
see an increase in the number of women entering the
woodworking industry, and hope that this positive trend
continues for many years to come”.
Pauline has been one of the driving forces behind the
development of the British Woodworking Federation into
the modern, participative and active organisation that
it is today. Her involvement in the BWF came quite by
chance as she married a carpenter and together they went
on to buy a second generation joinery company which had
previously been a member of the British Woodworking
Manufacturers Association. Needless to say, they
immediately renewed membership of what is now the BWF.
Along with training, Pauline cites the Code of Conduct
and membership numbers as the issues she is keen to
address during her presidency. She is immensely
passionate about the importance of training within the
industry, and is herself on course to complete an NVQ in
Management through one of the training programmes run by
the WITForum in conjunction with Everywoman.
