CMS Vibrations sures up foundations for McGarrell Reilly Homes
 Anti-vibration specialist, CMS Vibration Solutions, has provided a
complete foundation isolation system for two apartment blocks
located on a railway boundary in Cambridge. The three storey
McGarrell Reilly Homes development required anti-vibration treatment
to prevent ground borne vibrations generated by the nearby railway
lines from entering the building structure.
Working with the project’s structural engineers, CMS Vibrations
specified a combination of Regupol RAV300 and CMS ISOSheet materials
to isolate the concrete foundations of the apartments. Civil
engineering contractors for the project, Durman Stearn, then
installed the anti-vibration materials in the foundation pits.
Available exclusively in the UK through CMS Vibrations, Regupol
RAV300 is a high performance polyurethane bound rubber granulate
material, with a natural frequency in the range of 8-12Hz. In total,
185m2 of 50mm thick Regupol RAV300 was installed under the
foundations to eliminate structural noise and potential damage to
the structure from the trains operating nearby.
To achieve complete isolation, Durman Stearn installed 560m2 of CMS
ISOSheet on the sides of the foundations. A medium density closed
cell structure foam, CMS ISOSheet provides a natural frequency
ranging from 12Hz to 50Hz. Manufactured in a range of sheet sizes,
the material is also suitable for lightweight base isolation.
When excavating the pits, Durman Stearn identified that the ground
comprised sand and gravel rather than clay, resulting in a rough
surface on the sides of the foundations. CMS Vibrations advised that
by forming a flat surface using plywood, Regupol RAV300 and CMS
ISOSheet could still be used on the foundation pit. Once the
installation of the plywood and anti-vibration materials was
complete, a damp proof membrane was applied and the concrete cast up
to the floor level.

of Regupol RAV300 and CMS ISOSheet meant we could easily overcome
the unexpected complications of the ground composition. Once the
sides of the foundation pit had been prepared with plywood, the
installation of the anti-vibration treatments was really
straightforward.”
The proven performance levels and adaptability of Regupol RAV300 and
CMS ISOSheet has led to the specification of the materials for the
second phase of the development.
