DECOREX LIGHTS UP THE DESIGN WORLD CHELSEA ROYAL HOSPITAL, 21-24

 A greater demand for well-conceived lighting ideas comes with the
autumn/winter season. Energy usage is an increasingly important
consideration, yet glamour with a capital ‘G’ defines the shining
examples that will be seen at Decorex International, the foremost
exhibition of quality interior design products in the UK. We talk to
high profile lighting companies about what we can expect to see at
this year’s show.
Rainbow
The Bergomi family have been buying original lighting from Italy for
some twenty years, and were very much part of the antiques world in
the Lillie Road area of London. As the business has developed, the
family have created new interpretations of period designs (with
chandeliers a speciality), with many of their most stunning pieces
made to order in either Milan or Venice. The show will champion
their best work which includes the contemporary approach to
chandelier-style lighting. Their showroom has always housed some
fabulous examples of 20th century furniture, and at this year’s show
they will also exhibit a new collection of leather sofas and chairs
based on their passion for furniture design.
WOKA Lamps Vienna
For 20th century design enthusiasts WOKA is a name to remember. With
a showroom and gallery in the centre of Vienna, this company is
dedicated to buying and reproducing some of the most iconic lighting
designs of the past. Craftsmen, using original manufacturing tools
and casting moulds, are able to replicate designs to the highest
standard, and with a comprehensive library of original designs in
their archives, the range is limitless. With the company seeing
their work as a legacy for the future, each item is given a punch
marked certification of the maker before leaving the factory.
Spina
Since Spina launched in 2002, this decorative accessories and
lighting company’s name has been synonymous with glamour. Founder
designers, Robbie Spina and Joe Zito, now travel the world
overseeing extravagant light installations for the rich and famous.
Never a design duo to rest on their laurels, they are collaborating
with interior design guru John Stefanidis to create a pair of
floor-to-ceiling ‘pillars of light’ for the entrance lobby at the
show. Their stand will champion their latest design inspiration, “a
glamorous 1970s Italia decadence with hints of 1960s Barbarella”.
White enamelled acrylic beading, haematite, coral, pearl, leather
fringing, blackened nickel and crystal just hint at the intricate
detailing to be used throughout this elegant collection where a
softer silhouette of curves cements their current design philosophy.
Best & Lloyd
Best & Lloyd are a good barometer on what’s happening at the cutting
edge of lighting. Collaborating with designers such as Emily
Todhunter and Scott Cunningham, the company creates a beautifully
eclectic collection of high-on-style designs, all manufactured in
the UK. Having won an award for the Flo light at last year’s show,
Managing Director Sam Woodward gives us a taster of what’s to come.
“We are launching forty new designs at Decorex”, he comments, “and
we will be majoring on exciting materials such as rock crystal,
bronze and cast metal for a very different, more organic range of
wall and table lights not previously seen from Best & Lloyd”. There
will also be no shortage of wow factor on the stand with a unique
enamelled silver light created by the Queen's silversmith and
commanding a high price tag of some £30-35,000.
Phillips & Wood
Antique lighting dealer John Phillips and interior designer Joanna
Wood continue to go from strength to strength with their combined
talents that are the lighting company Phillips & Wood. As ever,
their stand will promote their latest collections with nickel-plated
metal still a firm favourite, but it is the centrepiece to the stand
that the company is particularly excited about. As John explains,
“We will be displaying a wonderful tribute installation to the
French designer Jean Royère. Making extraordinary and sometimes
eccentric lighting and furniture between the 1920s and 50s, Royère’s
originals now fetch upwards of £100,000, and can also be seen in The
Louvre. This interpretation, crafted to appear as metal wisteria
growing up a wall, is topped with somewhat quirky cylindrical
shades. We have every confidence it’s going to be a showstopper.”
Heathfield & Co
Heathfield & Co have a reputation in the interiors world for
producing well-conceived lighting collections that straddle the
classic/contemporary divide. They have developed a bespoke side of
the business but never lose sight of the winning combination -
affordability, quality and style. Sales and Design Director, Donna
Gridley describes the look we can expect. “Our inspiration this
Autumn is metallics, satin and new and interesting textures,
especially pleating. And we are working on more organic forms. We
will also be featuring new collections in glass, ceramic and metal
and a new wall light range with integral LEDs”. Colour will also
play a major role on the Heathfield & Co stand. Their colour palette
includes subtle hues of grey, blue and olive.
As well as lighting, Decorex 2008 will showcase inspiring and
exciting products from over 300 exhibitors ensuring it is the
must-visit destination for everyone involved in the interior design
industry.
