SHEERFRAME takes the lead as pvc windowmakers struggle to be
lead-free
 Ten
years ahead of the deadline for lead-free PVC in building, one UK
window systems company has already achieved totally lead-free
manufacturing.
Derbyshire-based Sheerframe systems company L.B. Plastics was the
first UK based PVC window and door systems company to phase out the
use of lead stabilisers, in 2005 – 10 years ahead of the Vinyl 2015
legislative requirement to do so - and remains the only one to be
lead-free across its whole product range.
Says L.B. Plastics’ marketing director, David Strang: “PVC windows
are greener than ever but housebuilders and specifiers should check
environmental credentials, including lead-free production.
“The revision of the BRE Green Guide shows PVC frames have been
re-rated from category C to category A for domestic and A+ for
commercial windows. This is a fantastic acknowledgment of the huge
strides made by the PVC window industry in recycling and overall
environmental responsibility, finally dispelling the myth that PVC
as a material represents any form of environmental concern. However,
not all PVC systems are the same.”
The entire range from L.B. Plastics is manufactured using calcium
organic stabiliser rather than lead including Sheerframe windows and
doors, Sheerlite conservatory roofs, Hometrim cellular boards and
trims, and Sheerline decking, fencing and drawers.
David Strang says, “We took the decision to use calcium organic
stabiliser rather than lead four years ago and went 100% lead free
three years ago as part of our commitment to enhanced environmental
manufacturing practices. We are also one of the few UK windows
companies to be ISO 9001 accredited.”
Its technically advanced range includes the new Sheerframe HED
system which achieves U-values of 0.8W/m2K and delivers superior
structural strength with enhanced thermal performance, providing
housebuilders and social housing providers with a quality,
sustainable product.
L.B. Plastics pioneered the co-extrusion process for gaskets and
seals and was one of the first manufacturers to introduce four and
five chamber profiles to deliver excellent thermal performance
whilst providing high levels of air and water tightness on all
Sheerframe windows.
The company has also developed Thermlock®, an advanced reinforcement
system, which is formed using a specialist thermoplastic compound
that is manufactured using recycled materials to encapsulate an
inner metal core. The reinforcement system creates the optimum
energy efficient, low carbon window that is capable of achieving
code level five and six of the Code for Sustainable Homes and an A
rating under the BFRC Window Energy Rating system.
L.B. Plastics is an active partner in helping to meet the waste
recovery targets within the industry and is committed to fully
recycling collectable end of use frames.
