RENEWABLE ENERGY MAKES THE DIFFERENCE FOR NEW HOMES DEVELOPMENT
 Cornwall-based developer Percy Williams & Sons is proving that
renewable energy really does make a huge difference to heating costs
and the environment, with a new eco-friendly development in Hayle,
near St Ives, Cornwall.
All properties on the first phase will benefit from ground source
heat pumps from Danfoss Heat Pumps UK, formerly ECO Heat Pumps. The
heat pumps will supply all the heating and hot water through an
innovative underfloor heating system, which means buyers will
benefit from huge savings on energy bills and a much lower carbon
footprint. The Ground Source Heat Pumps are fed by 80 to100m deep
bore holes drilled on the site before construction positioned under
the houses and discretely covered up, so you would never know they
were there.
‘Fairglen’ is an exclusive development of 28 properties, with 12
properties on the first phase recently released for sale. These
attractive three and four bedroom homes, feature a traditional
masonry structure combined with attractive timber cladding that
means they complement their surroundings, just half a mile from the
beach.
Ground Source Heat Pumps were chosen as part of a series of
environmental measures designed to achieve Code 4 as part of the
Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes legislation. This also
includes photovoltaic panels, heat recovery ventilation systems, a
high standard of insulation and rainwater harvesting techniques.
Percy Williams has benefit from funding through the Low Carbon
Buildings Programme (LCBP), which is one of the few developer
schemes nationally to have achieved their stringent standards.
The development was assessed by external consultants [who were]
impressed that the properties met their stringent standards for
energy efficiency, resulting in a 66% reduction in carbon emissions
when compared with a standard building regulation equivalent house.
Simon Williams, Managing Director of Percy Williams, explains: “We
are using natural materials, wherever possible, for the build, so it
made sense to incorporate a renewable energy source that would
provide sustainable heating, minimise Carbon Dioxide emissions and
be really cost effective to run. With the rising cost of fuel bills,
we are finding this is a strong selling point for buyers and is one
of the main reasons why we have received so much interest already.
The energy assessors who visited our development said it was simply
staggering the amount of energy that homeowners would save here and
[they] were hugely impressed with the reduction in the carbon
footprint.”
Ground Source heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular as
homeowners face the prospect of ever increasing fuel bills. In
addition, many people are actively seeking more environmentally
friendly methods of heating their homes as they become aware of
their own carbon footprint.
Sally Moore, Managing Director of ECO Heat Pumps, explains:
“Housebuilders are recognising the huge benefits of fitting heat
pumps. A typical ground source system, such as fitted in any of
these properties, will pay for itself in between 5-7 years, or even
less as the price of fuel soars. For buyers at Fairglen to have them
already installed is a fantastic advantage when choosing a new home
and should help these properties sell more quickly.”
Heat pumps are one of the most efficient means of generating energy.
For every single unit of electricity, a heat pump generates at least
four units of heat - compared to some of the most efficient oil or
gas boilers that convert around 90% of their fuel into heat.
Some householders also choose ‘green electricity’ to drive their
heat pumps which can mean that their heating system achieves carbon
neutrality. At Fairglen, the houses are fitted with photo-voltaic
panels which will generate some of this electricity.
Another major benefit of Ground Source Heat Pumps is that they are
completely safe to use and need no scheduled maintenance. They also
offer longevity and a ground source system typically lasts about 3
to 4 times the length of the average modern gas or oil boiler, and
this reduces annual running costs further still.
Danfoss Heat Pumps is one of the only UK heat pump suppliers that
works with an independent energy assessment company to ensure
customers receive a heat pump that operates to maximum efficiency to
suit their needs.
