DORMA in a class of its own at new Scottish school
 DORMA door controls have been specified and installed at a brand new
Additional Support Needs (ASN) school development by Perth and
Kinross Council in Scotland. The £6.5m Fairview School features an
impressive eco-friendly design and significantly raises the bar for
ASN facilities.
Architectural hardware specialists, John Monaghan Ltd supplied
DORMA’s AD4000 panic hardware at fire exits, and TS92 cam action
closers – some with electro-magnetic hold-open units (EMF) – to
classroom entrances and doors on the main routes throughout the
building.
The extensive range of access and security product options available
from DORMA, combined with its ability to help enable compliance with
health & safety requirements and the DDA, frequently make DORMA
first choice for specifiers involved with demanding new school
environments.
Project architect, Sundeep Salins of Perth and Kinross Council,
explains the thinking behind the specification of DORMA: “In order
to achieve a ‘non-institutional’ feel, the large building is broken
down into small, discrete zones that each child can distinguish as
their own ‘place’. This means that easy, yet safe and secure access
throughout the building is very important. We specified DORMA
products for a number of reasons, but primarily because they combine
aesthetics with a really dependable, robust performance, which is
what was required in this environment”.
Balancing safe egress in an emergency, with the need for security
against unwanted entry in a school setting is paramount and the
AD4000 series from DORMA is a popular solution. The series of full
door-width touchbars incorporates stainless steel deadlocking
Pullman type latches which require the minimum of effort to open and
are available in a range of architectural metal finishes. The AD4000
is suitable for single and double, timber and metal doors, and there
are special options for solenoid operation and monitoring switches.
The AD4000 has been successfully independently tested to BS EN 1125
and is CE marked.
DORMA’s unique cam-action closer solution – the TS92, features a
linear drive mechanism and heart-shaped cam that operates quite
differently to conventional rack and pinion closers. This design
ensures that the opening force falls away rapidly after the first
few degrees, resulting in little resistance throughout the opening
cycle – yet still retains sufficient force to close the door every
time. The result is a much easier and safer door operation for
children, people with physical disabilities and anyone carrying
books or equipment. The flush slide channel mechanism, in place of
the more conventional projecting scissor arm, also discourages
vandalism.
In addition to the standard TS92, a number of TS92 EMF units are
also fitted at Fairview School. These are electro-magnetic hold-open
variants, which enable the door to remain open securely at a
pre-selected position and as a result present no obstacle to anyone
using the door. However, in the event of an alarm or a fault in the
power supply, the hold-open feature is released and the door is shut
by the closer mechanism.
All of the TS92 units feature the latest CONTUR design styling, with
its attractive perforated inset end caps and clearly defined cubic
lines that bring total sophistication to any interior design
project.
