FASTLOCK KEEPS THE WEATHER AT BAY AT COMMUNITY SWIMMING POOL
Users of a community outdoor swimming pool in Devon are celebrating
the first use in the UK of an innovative, single-skin polycarbonate
roofing panel that protects them from the elements, although this
summer’s were rain rather than UV-dominated.
The flexible, weather-resistant transparent and white Fastlock
panels, which use an innovative and invisible fixing system that
negates screws and holes and therefore prevents leaks, have been
curved between 2.8 metres at the eaves to 3.4 metres at the ridge
over a timber-framed shelter that was built in just one day by the
side of the pool at Chudleigh primary school.
Fastlock, a member of the Icopal group, was specified by Timber
Design Limited, who are based in Chudleigh and carried out the work
on a charitable basis. The pool is run by Chudleigh Community
Project (CCP), a registered charity which relies on fundraising and
volunteers, and is open from May to September each year.
Built in 1997, the pool is mainly used for swimming lessons for the
primary school children and public swimming out of school hours. It
is also available for private parties and is booked regularly by a
local swimming club.
After receiving grants from Ugbrooke Environmental, a local
distributor of the Landfill Communities Fund, and Teignbridge
District Council, along with sponsorship from local businesses and
residents, CCP’s brief to Timber Design Ltd was to design a spacious
and attractive but cost-effective and low-maintenance poolside
shelter which would protect at least 30 people at one time from the
weather and UV rays.
Cameron Scott of Timber Design Ltd, who worked on site with members
of the community to install the douglas fir and larch shelter, said:
“We specified the Fastlock panels due to their aesthetics,
efficiency of installation and ability to curve.
“We needed a clear line of sight from the kiosk and upper level to
the pool for safety. This meant the roof had to start quite high up
but we were keen for this then not to give us a correspondingly high
roof ridge. By opting for a curved roof we were able to keep the
ridge height low but it was Fastlock that made this curved roof
possible.
“The exceptional UV protection offered by Fastlock was also a major
consideration for this scheme. The ability to mix white and clear
Fastlock panels without the need to use jointing strips definitely
added to the visual value of the structure and gave a choice of
shaded/un-shaded areas for seating.”
He added: “Using the Fastlock system rather than a more conventional
method allowed us to complete the installation in one day, which
saved us at least a day’s work.”
An important part of the design process for local planners was to
integrate roofing panels which complemented the timber frame and
surrounding school buildings. Fastlock did just that and the shelter
was approved by Teignbridge Council first time with no objections.
Nicola White, planning officer at the council, said: “The structure
appealed to me due to its height and contemporary design. I
considered that the shape and materials were in keeping with the
site and surroundings of the school as well as it having an appeal
in its own right within the confines of the school. It was
considered a design proposal that was appealingly contemporary for a
school project.”
Because it can be curved without compromising durability, Fastlock
is ideal for all kinds of canopy solutions. Available in standard
lengths of up to six metres, the 20cm-wide panels simply clip
together and can be cleaned easily with water or household
detergent. Curving the panels ensures that any dust and impurities
can be regularly washed away by rainwater, maximising their
low-maintenance. Although the standard colours of transparent and
white were used at Chudleigh, Fastlock can be manufactured in
virtually any colour to a client’s requirements.
Alison Palmer, a member of the CCP committee, said: “We wanted to
provide protection from rain and UV on poolside to benefit the
school children while waiting for their swimming lessons,
weather-proof our private hires and improve facilities for our
customers generally.
“As a charity that relies on grants and fundraising for any capital
projects the cost of our design was the most important factor. We
also wanted it to look good and complement the area to raise our
profile and make people want to come to the pool.
“The team got the roof up quickly and with no problems. It provides
a light environment so we don’t have to use artificial lighting but
still provides UV protection. We think it is going to increase our
numbers and improve our balance sheet.”
She added: “We are really pleased with the Fastlock roof panels. As
the structure is high it gives a very light and airy feel – you
still feel outdoors. The curved roof is very attractive and many of
our customers have commented on how nice it is.”
