14th November 2008: Leading building materials provider, CEMEX, has won the contract to provide 5,500 cubic metres for the foundations and flooring of the new prestigious Riverside Museum, which is a new development for the Glasgow Museum of Transport, currently under construction in the Glasgow Harbour.

The £74 million development was started in March 2008 and was designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Zaha Hadid. She has also designed the 2012 Olympics Aquatics Centre and is known for pushing the boundaries of architecture and urban design. Its design was allegedly meant to represent the ‘s’ shape of the River Kelvin flowing into the River Clyde. The location within Glasgow Harbour celebrates the river and means that the existing collection and visiting craft will be able to berth alongside the museum.

The management contractor is HBG Scotland, with CEMEX working on behalf of sub-contractor WH Malcolm.

CEMEX in Scotland has already supplied 2,200 cubic metres of C2835 readymixed concrete from its largest Readymix plant in Scotland, the Clyde Tunnel plant, for the piling undertaken by contractor, Cementation. The concrete was used to fill 1,000 piles driven 20 metres into the ground following the excavation of 6,000 tonnes of ground materials. The piling will support the ground floor slab of the new building.

The 21st century design building will be completed in the summer of 2011 and is expected to attract up to one million visitors a year, by creating a more accessible and environmentally stable home for Glasgow's significant Transport and Technology collections, including more than 3,000 objects and exhibiting stored materials not currently on public display.
