ROCKWOOL SPECIFIED FOR GREEN CHAPEL CONVERSION
 A former chapel in the Medway Renaissance Area of Chatham, Kent is
being transformed into a highly sustainable and energy efficient
mixed use development using Rockwool’s high performance insulation,
Rockwool Flexi.
The former chapel, located on Richard Street in Chatham City Centre,
is being renovated from one existing single storey retail unit to
include a larger retail unit and four high specification studio
apartments.
The development was designed to be as energy efficient and as
environmentally sound as possible. In addition to Rockwool’s high
performance insulation, the building design includes a rainwater
harvesting system, intensive green roofing and uses only recycled
and sustainable building materials throughout.
Patrick Kennedy-Sanigar of project designers, Space Shuffle,
commented on the conversion: “Space Shuffle has been building
‘outside the box’ for the last eight years. We always build to
Scandinavian standards, which means our large house designs are so
thermally efficient that even the smallest boiler is too big.
“Because of this, and the fact that energy efficiency is our ethos,
we always make a point of specifying Rockwool for all our projects.
Rockwool Flexi is specified at the Richard Street development as its
cuts out on site ‘gappiness’, which is so important when it comes to
both air and thermographic image testing.
“Another major advantage is that the product is non-combustible and
with timber frame, which is a must to achieve level 5 and 6 of the
Code for Sustainable Homes, using Rockwool between the studs is a
‘no brainer’!”
With phase one currently under construction, the development will
perform at more than twice the requirement of current Building
Regulations for energy efficiency. Phase one is hoped to be
completed summer of 2009, followed by phase two, which will add a
further four apartments and a town house to the development.
Rockwool Flexi is a unique insulation product with a patented
flexible edge which ensures a perfect fit is maintained between the
product and its supporting framework.
Flexi is designed for a broad range of applications where perfect
fitting insulation is essential, such as walls, partitions, floors
and roofs. The ‘Flexi’ edge allows the product to be tightly fitted
between both timber and metal frames, without the need for cutting
or waste.
Rockwool Flexi is manufactured using stone wool, which is one of the
most environmentally friendly and energy efficient construction
products available and meets the highest standards of ‘cradle to
cradle’ sustainability, energy conservation and recyclability.
Rockwool stone wool insulation has a low embodied energy of
16.8MJ/Kg and has zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) and Global
Warming Potential (GWP). Its excellent thermal properties
significantly cut energy consumption in homes, reducing the need to
burn fossil fuels and therefore helping to minimise harmful
emissions of greenhouse gases.
