The Weatherite Group recently designed, supplied and installed a bespoke cooling solution at the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre, Mount Vernon Hospital in Middlesex. The Paul Strickland Scanner Centre is a charity that provides specialist cancer, heart and general scans of the highest standard for diagnosis, treatment monitoring or research, both to the NHS and private healthcare sector in the UK. The Centre had purchased a picture archiving and communication system for their medical images and called on Weatherite Building Services, in conjunction with the main contractor Heartfield Ventilation and Air Conditioning Co Limited, to develop a unique solution.

One of the main problems the project faced was the limited space available. The PACS room was not only small in size but contained a large amount of communication equipment, so Weatherite Manufacturing Limited were charged with supplying a bespoke cooling unit that would provide a high cooling output.

The lack of any form of plant room or space for a condensing unit also presented another obstacle and meant that Weatherite Manufacturing Limited also needed to supply a DX compressor and condenser unit, alleviating the need for any installation on-site of refrigerant pipework and so maximising the available space without impeding on performance.

Weatherite Building Services (WBS) top priority was to achieve the best possible solution for the application and so the unit supplied by Weatherite Manufacturing Limited also had to provide free cooling. By adapting to the surrounding conditions the unit offered lower running and operational costs to the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre along with the ability to be connected to a UPS ensuring unbroken cooling even in the event of a power failure.

WBS also specified an auto alarm facility due the high value and importance of the content of the room, combined with the fact that it was unmanned to ensure optimum security.

WBS were appointed to project manage the installation due to the total project responsibility offered by working with the Weatherite Group of Companies and taking into account the difficulties on site provided an efficient and effective air cooling system.
