International Search for Jewellery Quarter
Square Designer Begins
Plans for a stunning £1.5 million public square in the
heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter have moved a
step closer with the launch of an international design
competition to find a world-class designer for the
project.
The ‘Golden Square’ will be provide a place for visitors
and locals alike to meet, socialise and unwind, as well
providing a public space for markets, exhibitions and
events to take place.
It will be located in the centre of the historic quarter
which is home to more than 1,500 businesses, 200 listed
buildings and produces 40% of all the jewellery
manufactured in UK each year.
Already a designated conservation area the Quarter has
been described by English Heritage as a unique historic
environment with few, if any, parallels in Europe, and
is currently bidding for World Heritage status.
Cllr Neville Summerfield, Cabinet Member for
Regeneration, said:
“Already established as one of the true gems of the city
this new square will enhance the Jewellery Quarter’s
appeal even further, providing a meeting place for the
wide range of visitors, businesses and residents who
live, work and play in the area.
“Developing a square which is sensitive to the historic
setting, yet effective in serving the needs of the
community is both a challenge and a great opportunity,
and we are confident that this international design
competition will help us identify a designer with the
suitable calibre and vision to deliver on this.”
To be officially opened at a special event on 19th
November the two-stage international design competition
will first see interested architect asked to make an
initial submission in response to the Council’s design
brief, before six design teams are shortlisted for
interview and asked to make a detailed response to the
brief, including concept designs.
To judge the competition the Council has pulled together
an impressive judging panel including Ruth Reed
President Elect of the RIBA, panel chairman Andrew
Taylor, Founding Partner of Patel Taylor Landscape
Architecture practice and Professor Kathryn Moore, Past
President of the Landscape Institute.
