Stokesley architects, DKS, have been revealed as the only regional firm to make the short list in the international design competition to lead the redevelopment of Redcar seafront – in the North East of England.

The competition, run by the Royal Institute of British Architects, invited architects and designers around the world to submit proposals to regenerate the town’s seafront in collaboration with Redcar & Cleveland borough Council and the Environment Agency. The brief for the work promotes innovative design as a catalyst to develop Redcar as an attractive tourist destination – helping to deliver economic growth and strong regional identity.

Architect David Mack, leading the bid for DKS said: “The whole aim of this project is to effect dramatic change in the perception and reality of a day at Redcar Beach. This is an ambitious piece of work which will deliver real benefits to the people and businesses of Redcar.”

DKS’s proposals cover the central area of the town - the shore road, the beach and the town centre. The plans propose new structures, lighting, public facilities, surface treatments, buildings, sculptures, and road re-alignment.

DKS partner, Mark Barlow said: “Well thought out, intelligent design can transform the fortunes of any location; developing identity and pride among local residents. This is a prestigious piece of work for the region and we are delighted to have been chosen as the only North East representation in an international competition. We eagerly await the results of the public consultation process and hope that we can play a pioneering role in creating something special for Redcar and our region.”

DKS’s plans were recently on view in the town, alongside those of the four other contenders, as part of a public consultation which has now concluded. The five plans will now be judged by a panel of experts who are expected to make a final decision in the New Year.
