Earth Building UK [EBUK] – the launch of the UK’s first national
association to support and promote the use of earth construction in
the UK
A group of individuals drawn from construction, academia,
architecture and engineering are launching a UK network association
at University of Bath on 16th January 2009. The association will
pool knowledge and experience of building with earth. One of the
first objectives of the group will be to ascertain the size of the
industry, its annual value and growth to become an effective
lobbying body. EBUK has also attracted the country’s biggest brick
manufacturer Ibstock as a member.
Although the UK has a tradition of earth building, many people in
the industry do not realise the recent growth and uptake of this
material. Over the past ten years earth as a construction material
has begun to appear all over the country in buildings of all types
from public [e.g. The Eden Project, Cornwall] and commercial [e.g.
River Green Developments, Durham] to private houses. Architects and
engineers, university faculties, contractors, researchers and
consultants have started to use materials with low carbon footprints
to produce a new generation of sustainable buildings. A wide range
of different technologies is being used from unfired clay bricks to
earth plasters, load bearing structures to humidity controllers and
heat sinks – all of which are the territory of earth building.
Ibstock and other well known industries have recognised that the
rising cost of energy has had an impact on their production and now
produce a wide range of unfired products.
The formation of EBUK builds on several recent publications
including the ‘Rammed Earth Design and Construction Guidelines’ and
‘Earth masonry - Design and Construction Guidelines’ which examine
many aspects of designing and building with earth in the UK. Funding
by the DTI for such publications shows that this technology is
getting serious recognition from more than just the building
industry.

Patrick Holden, Director of Soil Association
Patrick has been involved in farming and the organic movement in the
UK for 30 years. He is an advocate of sustainability and how we use
the materials our environment provides.
Stephan Jörchel of Dachverband Lehm e.V.
Stephan founded a German earth building group, underlining cross
sectoral links of soil and construction as well as its international
applicability and potential.
Rowland Keable
Rowland is the UK’s leading expert on rammed earth building with
over 20 years of experience building, teaching and researching
rammed earth walls in Africa, the UK and Australia.

represent the interests and views of those involved, to lobby for
earth to be made more widely available as a viable, low carbon,

Why Earth?
Because it’s beautiful, affordable, locally sourced and reduces our
dependence on cement, a leading carbon dioxide emitter. The use of
earth as a construction material goes back into human pre-history
but in the 20th century hire fired high polluting product based
industry all but destroyed the working practice of centuries in this
country and in many parts of the world. At least a third of all 7bn
people in the world still live in earth buildings (perhaps 100,000
in the U.K. alone). But building regulations and standards have
gradually made the use of these technologies a specialist activity
rather than a normal part of the building industry.
