KNAUF DRYWALL TEES OFF AT HIGH SPEC LEISURE COMPLEX
 High
specifications and Knauf Drywall systems add real
quality to the walls and ceilings of a spectacular five
star leisure complex in the North East. Knauf Drywall’s
range of high performance plasterboards and other
systems are specified for lining, partitioning and
ceilings throughout Rockliffe Hall, currently being
remodelled as an exclusive hotel and spa on a
picturesque 18 hole golf course development on the banks
of the Tees, near Darlington. High performance
plasterboards Knauf Soundshield and Knauf Fireshield are
used to achieve the highest acoustic and fire safety
standards, with Knauf Moistureshield and Knauf Aquapanel
providing appropriate solutions for moister environments
or tile-backing in bathrooms, showers, changing rooms
and swimming pool areas.
Rockliffe Hall, an 18th century estate at Hurworth on
Tees, is now being renovated to form the core of the new
hotel, with more guest rooms and apartments in adjacent
newbuild structures. Also under construction are a
luxury spa complex and a clubhouse for the 300 acre golf
course, in a horseshoe bend of the river.
To complement the five star service and comfort
standards, hotel rooms feature high specification walls
and ceilings – ensuring that guests also enjoy acoustic
privacy. With Shepherd Construction as Main Contractor,
Middlesbrough-based Fastrack Specialist Interiors is
implementing the demanding drylining and plastering
specifications. Topping the list are the 215mm dense
concrete block walls between bedrooms: these have to be
plastered and independently lined on each side with two
layers of 12.5mm Knauf Soundshield on 70mm Knauf ‘I’
Studs and 25mm Knauf Crown Partition Roll in the voids.
Knauf MF suspended ceilings are fitted to in situ
concrete soffits, with a single layer of 15mm Knauf
Wallboard below void areas and two layers of 15mm Knauf
Soundshield under plant rooms. A range of drywall
partitions for the hotel accommodation, golf clubhouse
and other facilities is designed for up to 60 minutes’
fire resistance and up to 50dB sound insulation. Knauf
MP75 one-coat Projection Plaster is used extensively
throughout the complex, providing a solution for
rendered walls that is up to three times faster than
traditional two-coat, hand-applied plaster.
Fastrack Director Phil Kelly says it’s one of the
highest specifications his company has ever worked with.

skills ranging from renovating intricately designed
Victorian decorative plasterwork to installing the high
specification plasterboard systems. We are using the
very best products and systems for each part of the job,
and we’ve been getting excellent support from the Knauf
Drywall team, both at the project planning stage and
during the installation.”

Thorburn, says the redevelopment of Rockliffe Hall
provides a showcase for modern drywall and plastering
technology. “Overall, the project confirms that these
versatile and cost-effective systems can play prominent
roles right up to the top of the building spectrum.”

plasterboards, insulating laminates, dry flooring,
drywall accessories, and metal sections for domestic,
