FROM BROWNFIELD TO MULTI-COLOURED CAR PARK WITH MARLEY ETERNIT
 Two types of fibre cement cladding panels from Marley
Eternit were specified by architects Red Box Design for
their aesthetics and cost-effectiveness on a building on
the new Gateshead College campus.
The private multi-storey car park on the college’s new
£37 million Baltic Business Quarter campus features
400m² of Marley Eternit’s Natura Plus cladding on two
external staircases and 400m² of Textura cladding in
four colours on the facades.
Installed by specialist sub-contractor Barclay Roofing
for main contractor Shepherd Construction, the Natura
Plus through-colour panels in Anthracite were used as a
rainscreen system over five storeys and screwed to
vertical timber battens.
The four colours of Textura highly-glazed,
granular-finished panels in blue grey, light grey, sky
blue and pale green, were fixed similarly over three
storeys but due to the open nature of the car park
elevations, were not required as a rainscreen system.
The 400-space car park next to the main, 150,000ft²
college building was built of structural steel frame and
concrete floors on a 60-acre brownfield site being
developed by Terrace Hill on Gateshead Quayside that
used to house heavy manufacturing and industrial units.
The college and its 12,000 students have relocated from
a site on Durham Road to facilities that include
state-of-the-art performance studios, art and design
workshops, a theatre, salon and spa, bistros and cafes,
and social areas.
Peter Lea, an associate at architects Red Box Design who
have used Marley Eternit cladding for many years on a
range of commercial, healthcare and education projects,
said: “We specified the Marley Eternit cladding panels
as they are products we have used in the past to good
effect. They are cheaper than some of the other
rainscreen systems out there but still deliver crisp
lines in any fenestration.
“The cladding formed the external spandrel panels of the
car park, providing an aesthetic solution to normally
bland concrete. As a car park’s fabric is mainly open
and ventilated, the Marley Eternit spandrels were pretty
much isolated. That is why we mixed the panel module
sizes and colours.
“The client was extremely impressed by the simplicity
and cost-effective nature of the product and the
aesthetic it delivered to the car park.”
College principal Richard Thorold added: “Since
announcing plans for the new campus we have experienced
a significant rise in the number of students enrolling
on our courses. This proves that students are looking
for the best learning environment available.”
