POWERMINSTER TO PROVIDE FM SERVICES FOR NEW INDEPENDENT LIVING
CENTRE
 A new centre for disabled children has been given the go ahead by
Leeds City Council and the Leeds Independent Living Accommodation
Company (LiLAC). The project will provide a short break unit, with
12 bedrooms, which are designed to help young people over 14 to
develop their independent living skills. The building will be
constructed by Jack Lunn (Properties) Ltd and Sheffield-based
Powerminster Gleeson Services will be responsible for facilities
management and maintenance for the unit.
The building will be named ‘Rainbow House’ and will include
playground equipment, a soft play room, a sensory garden and a
special garden for the self-help unit.
Rainbow House is part of a major PFI project planned by the LiLAC
consortium, which aims to deliver modern new homes for 350 adults
with learning disabilities and mental health needs who currently
live in 13 hostels across the city. The aim is to allow them to live
closer to their own communities in smaller, less institutional and
more independent settings. The new units for children are an
eight-bed service for disabled young people approaching adulthood
and a short breaks unit for severely disabled children and young
people.
David Bradbury, PFI Director for Powerminster Gleeson Services
explains: “This is a really worthwhile project to be involved with
and we are looking forward to seeing its huge success. We are
confident that our expertise in providing maintenance services for
buildings whose occupants have very specific or sensitive needs
means we will be able to provide a highly effective service for
Rainbow House.”
In 2007, Leeds City Council selected the LiLAC Consortium as the
Preferred Bidder for the £65 million Independent Living Project. In
total, 70 purpose-designed properties will be built for adults, plus
two for children, on 39 sites across Leeds, following the go-ahead
for the government-approved and Private Finance Initiative-funded
project.
The homes will provide modern, flexible accommodation to suit the
needs of the people using the properties and giving them as much
independence as possible.
Cllr Stewart Golton, executive board member for Children’s Services
at Leeds City Council, said: “It’s really fantastic news that
Rainbow House is to become a reality. Disabled children and young
people deserve the best we can give them and I am confident that
many young lives will be enriched by the opportunities that will be
on offer there.”
