LIGHTING DESIGNERS SHINE IN FACTORY GALLERY
 An innovative lighting manufacturer in Brighton has created an
exhibition gallery within its factory to showcase the talents of
leading and emerging designers.
Horsell Electrics (www.horselllighting.co.uk) has opened the Rodhus
gallery at its factory in Hollingdean Road after a business
improvement project with the Manufacturing Advisory Service South
East (MAS) helped to free up 700sq ft of former production space.
"The lean manufacturing project with MAS streamlined all our
processes and meant that we were able to convert an area that was
previously being used for storage into a gallery where we can
display the work of local and nationally-recognised lighting
designers," says Horsell Managing Director Richard Ainsworth.
The Rodhus gallery is currently home to the Beauty in British
Manufacturing exhibition, which celebrates 60 years of manufacturing
and includes stunning examples of contemporary lighting.
It includes the remarkable work of Abbi Kiki, from Brighton, who has
recycled materials from Horsell's manufacturing plant to create
unique lighting designs. The space also tells the story,
pictorially, of the company's history.
"The gallery is also a statement about how we see our future as
manufacturers," says Richard. "It can be difficult to compete with
mass market items manufactured in lower cost regions, but where we
are increasingly winning is through our ability to offer bespoke
lighting of high quality. Around 70 percent
of our output is bespoke - for example we recently completed a
special project with the Queens Tennis Club - and the gallery space
is a tangible way of both communicating this area of expertise and
changing the perception of Horsell as a manufacturer.
"The aim of the gallery is to be a focal point for national and
local designers who push the boundaries - we also want to forge
links with our local colleges to showcase the talent of students. On
one level, it's a good way of differentiating our business in our
market but more importantly it provides established and emerging
designers with a chance to shine.literally."
Garry Barr, the MAS specialist who led the project with Horsell,
said that the space could not have been created without the
company's determination to drive efficiency improvements.
"Richard and his team embarked on a major marketing programme last
year and it was essential that the manufacturing processes kept pace
with the increase in business by removing inefficiencies and
focusing attention on the areas that added value to customers. The
whole workforce has really bought into the lean manufacturing
programme - and now the benefits are spilling out to the wider
community."
