Logan Energy Limited, the fuel cell and hydrogen technologies specialist, has been a hive of activity over the past six months despite the turbulent UK energy marketplace.

John Lidderdale, Managing Director at Logan Energy Limited attributes this to: “The combination of energy efficiency, carbon reduction and the realisation of Britain having energy shortages in the future sinks in, the UK government and others around Europe are recognizing that hydrogen is a viable alternative energy source that can be implemented today. This is also being reflected in the new business partnerships we have secured over the past year.”

With the energy crisis looming and potential for power blackouts, fuel cells can provide buildings and estates with their own source of electricity and heat or provide a back-up for those mission critical supplies. The fact that it can also heat, power and cool buildings and is incredibly clean and quiet with the only emission being water, allows hydrogen based solutions to be a viable alternative for businesses.

Logan Energy has also been invited to exhibit on the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) stand at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi on 19-21 January, reinforcing the role hydrogen fuel has to play in the future of alternative energy solutions and the specialism Logan Energy has in this sector.

New Logan Energy recruit

Bill Ireland is the latest member to join the Logan Energy management team alongside Dave Illingworth and John Lidderdale. Bill becomes Logan’s Director of Operations and is responsible for driving the business of Logan Energy in the UK and Europe.

Relocation to Scotland

Logan Energy has moved from its base in Nottingham to new offices in St Andrew Square, Edinburgh. This is partly a result of the equity investment Scottish and Southern Energy plc (SSE) and Scottish Enterprise’s Scottish Co-investment Fund (SCF) made earlier this year.

John adds: “The commitment by SSE and SCF demonstrates that fuel cells are a real alternative energy solution that is available and being implemented in commercial applications today.”

New Business Wins

It has also been a busy time at Logan with several new business wins this year including two 200kWe fuel cells in tri-generation projects being commissioned in 2008 and 2009, one at TfL’s Palestra Building and the other at SSE’s new HQ for the Southern Electric division of SSE, and more recently a double first in portable fuel cells. Logan is also preparing for a very exciting forthcoming announcement.

Camden boasts double first in portable fuel cell project

In a bid to tackle pollution in the capital – a new zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell will be used to provide clean temporary power at Council events in Camden and Croydon, replacing traditional fossil fuel generators; which can be dirty, noisy and unreliable. The hydrogen fuel cell powered a VOSA roadside vehicle emissions testing unit at its launch at city hall.

The fuel will come from Camden’s new hydrogen fuelling depot – the first local authority-owned hydrogen fuelling facility in the country. Logan Energy irresponsible for maintaining the first fuel cell generator incorporating a 5kW PEM fuel cell.
