British Safety Council pledges greater support to health and
safety professionals with total training offering
 With the addition of NEBOSH qualifications to their already
established range of courses, the British Safety Council decided to
commission an in-depth study of opinions. The aim was to fully
understand what health and safety professionals really want from a
training provider and attempt to tackle the crucial question - “What
more can we do to encourage and inspire health and safety
professionals by improving the quality of our health and safety
training?”
It was clear that there is a lot of training choice available, but
opinion showed that courses that are the most relevant and
applicable to the risks encountered by the health and safety
professional in their particular workplaces are the most popular.
Importantly the survey also showed that professionals prefer more
practical content in their courses, and would greatly benefit from
continuing support and post-course follow up care.
Continuing care is an area that the BSC has been proactively
addressing through its training course provision as it considers it
essential to provide ongoing support to those who have taken
training. Having also just become an accredited centre for the
provision of the NEBOSH National General Certificate, the BSC is
offering support to all its candidates with a personalised mentoring
programme. This means that candidates will get support and guidance
from the moment a course is booked, through to taking the
examinations and, importantly, the transition back into the
workplace.
Mandy Disney, a leading training provider for a number of
organisations including the BSC, explained: ‘Health and safety
professionals regularly have to deal with difficult situations in
the workplace, not to mention the issues such as changing people’s
working practices and behaviours. We provide training but then they
are left to get on with it on their own. By ensuring that we don’t
just say goodbye at the door, we can help with the practical day to
day issues that employees might come across. This will help give a
confidence boost and support when they are dealing with tricky
issues or just want a second opinion.’
Changing ingrained habits and practices is a challenge in itself,
especially when this involves trying to get those in senior
positions in the organisation to provide leadership and encourage
others by their example. This is a huge hurdle in trying to get an
organisation to behave and think differently and to take health and
safety seriously.
BSC Chief Executive Brian Nimick said: “The support now offered by
the BSC will be crucial in helping health and safety professionals
to break down some of the barriers that they face and facilitate
changes in working practices. It is essential that safety training
is not compromised in these financially frugal times. By giving
people the choice of both NEBOSH and BSC qualifications, we hope
that health and safety training continues to be an integral part of
business activity. The best training means saved lives, reduced
accidents, a healthier workforce and a better bottom line for
business.”
The BSC is the only health and safety training organisation to offer
a fully comprehensive suite of accredited qualifications to meet the
needs of health and safety professionals across all levels, sectors
and disciplines.. In offering both the NEBOSH National General
Certificate (NGC) and the British Safety Council Level 3 Certificate
in Occupational Safety and Health (CertOSH), candidates can get
unbiased advice and guidance in their choice of qualifications.
