Barnes Common is a major green space in the London Borough of Richmond and is centred on Barnes Station, an important commuter point for thousands of local residents. To provide better security with lower energy costs for the station access, Richmond upon Thames Council has chosen the new 2-Tone lantern from WRTL to relight the footpath over the common and the steps to the station.

Andrew Darvill, Assistant Director of Traffic and Transport for Richmond upon Thames Council, said:

“These new energy saving lanterns provide a ‘white’ light which will improve security on the Common as well as enabling us to continue our drive to cut energy costs and reduce our carbon footprint.”

The installation of 55 2-Tone lanterns uses the advanced 45W CosmoPolis lamps and electronic gear. The installation comprises green painted 5 metre high Pudsey Diamond raise and lower tubular columns for rapid maintenance without needing lifting plant for access; installation was by Richmond Lighting Team Contractors David Webster Limited.

The lighting scheme was designed by engineering consultants Mouchel, which suggested the 2-Tone lanterns for the Barnes Station Improvement Scheme Phase 1. The project was funded with help from Transport for London’s Area Based Schemes Programme. Project Manager Melanie Maldonado said: “We are making major improvements to the pedestrian and road access to the station. The 2-Tone lantern’s low glare optics enable lighting engineers to take full advantage of the outstanding CosmoPolis lamp.”

Technical note: WRTL’s new 2-Tone is the first street lantern designed specifically to conform to the strict S1 G6 Glare classification for light pollution nuisance in built up areas, with advanced 3-D optics and flat glass for minimum light spillage.

In addition, the 2-Tone lantern design capitalises on the exceptional energy efficiency and size advantages of the innovative, high intensity discharge lamps currently available. It accommodates the CosmoPolis, CDM-T/HCI-T (Powerball) and HQI-T white light sources between 45 and 150W outputs, complete with electronic gear.

Its extremely compact dimensions (body 445mm long, 216mm wide, 107mm high) make it visibly smaller than competitive larger scale lanterns widely used for these new light sources. The aesthetics of its compact design and subtly toned finish also help it to blend into a wide variety of urban streetscapes.

The 2-Tone’s small size also helps its sustainability credentials through the reduced carbon footprint in its manufacture, lower transport costs and less material with no glue; it can be fully dismantled with near total recyclability. All these features help it spearhead WRTL’s Energy efficiency, Sustainability and Performance (ESP) initiative.
